I would recommend a reputable jewerly store like Reeds, Zales, Kay ...... That is where my husband got my engagement ring. I know Reeds offers lifetime warrenties you can purchase so if your ring gets damaged or lost you are protected. All I have to do is go in every six months to get the warrenty signed and they inspect and clean your jewerly.
It is a very expensive and loving gift, you want it to be protected.

Well you could get one anywhere really. Personally I went to Zales because its christmas and I Was able to get my fiance a $7000 ring for $5500. Thats Great. Alot of the chain stores have better quality Diamonds too because they are able to buy stones and rings cheaper in bulk which alot of independents cant afford. For a better chance of a one of a kind ring go to an independent though. It all up to you. Dont let someone else make up your mind. Good Luck!

Go to a respectable store that is going to be around for a long time. Get a Diamond Guarentee, and pay the extra if they have a plan for maintenance, like cleaning and having the diamond checked. I would recommend getting to know your diamond by a specific feature in it, that way if you ever have to send it out for fixing, you know you are getting the same diamond back.

I would go for a chain store, the independant stores tend to charge more to make money. Chain stores can be more flexible cause they have the money behind them.

independent stores gives personal treatment. They seem more attentive to your wants and needs and have better selection. however if you're on a budget, chain stores or antique shops suits the bill.

Do your homework first on cut and clarity and different types of metals and you can go anywhere. Even wal-mart has very nice rings but you have to know how to sort the junk from the good stuff. I have my mom's rings but she got her's from Kay Jeweler's.

If you have a Diamond Cellar near you, check them out. They explain everything about diamonds to you. Even if you don't buy there, you'll be able to make an informed decision when you do buy. But they are nice and reasonably priced.
