The vet is closed for the holiday weekend, and I hate to see my puppy so miserable. She is 11 months old, and we just found short white worms in her stool. Does anyone know what I could give her to temporarily fight the worms? It will be a few more days before the vet opens again.

She has tapeworms..she is not miserable and it won't hurt her any to wait until the vet office is open. This is NOT an emergency. She will be fine to wait for a couple of days until you can get into see your regular vet and pick up meds. There is no home remedy or OTC remedy that works effectively or safely. You need to get a dewormer from your vet. I also recommend taking a stool sample in and getting a fecal test done to make sure she doesn't have other types of worms in addition to tapews. I also would get her treated for fleas(tapeworms are caused either by fleas or eating mice, rats, rabbits).

There really is not any @ home remedy for worms. The best thing to do is to take a sample of stool to a vet. Try calling your vet and see if they have an emergency service available (my vet does have one as to most other vets) and see if they can direct you to another vet that can help sooner or they can perhaps handle it themselves or tell you what you can do to help.

You can also call around for another vet or an emergency vet hospital and talk to them about what's going on. The best bet is to actually do that instead of trying an at home remedy or waiting four or five days for your dog becauses your dog can get sicker.

Emergency vets can be more expensive than the actual vet itself. I know when I had to take my dog to an emergency vet tehy charged me a flat out $125 for the vet to look @ my dog. Which isn't a rip off because it's ER.....my human ER visit was a copay of a $100 bucks plus whatever else the insurace didn't cover. But after all of that it was definately worth it to me because it made me feel better that my dog (although a sprain) was going to get well..they also put a note on my account that stated my dog was very lucky to have me as an owner :)

Good Luck.

There is always the emergency vet which fills in for times like this. Because there are many different types of worms only a trained professional can determine what type the dog has and then medicate it appropriately. I would not be looking on the Internet for a snake oil treatment.

You can try an OTC wormer, but it's probably best to wait until the vet opens or try to find an emergency vet. Make sure you get a good stool sample before you go, it's necessary to determine the type of treatment needed.

Are the worms about the size of rice? Do the dried ones look like grains of rice? If so this is tapewaorms and is not an emergency, but you should take your dog to the vet first thing when they open on Tuesday.

If there is an emergency vet in your area you can go there and get a worm pill. They aren't very expensive. Your vet may even have the number for the nearest one on their answering machine.

Over the counter worm treatments are not as effective. Take a stool sample to your vet and let him prescribe the correct dewormer for your pup.
