I would give her a card expressing my gratitude for what she's done, and also maybe just a sincere thanks for her support and her belief in your capabilities on your job (this is probably why such a hugh monetary gift). This not only shows appreciation for the money but also shows graciousness, and a finesse for proper acknowledgement.

Do not mention that you are underpaid. Most people are and I think most managers and supervisors, etc KNOW this. Just say Thank you for this gift I know I will get good use out of this. However----I would suck up to the boss. If you are in for profit place you could get a raise-unlike me working for a non-for-profit Residental Treatment Facility- word is going around "no raises for 2 more years." Been there for 2 years and no raise. Try it if you don't mind playing that game. If you really want a raise, you will get it.

Write a thank you note on a card and seal it in an envelope. Then lay the envelope on the boss's desk, if not, you can mail it. They will appreciate it. Here is a thank you note example: "Dear___, It's been a pleasure working for you this year. Thank you for your generosity regarding the christmas bonus. It helps alot. Best wishes for good health, peace, and happiness throughout the new year." Sincerely, Emily

Thank her just the same even if you are underpaid. Tell her how much you appreciate her "generosity" and how you are going to use the money. This might give her the impression that you need a raise without asking for it.

I think thank you notes are so nice. The fact that you send her a thank you note will get the message across. She will appreciate it. I appreciate your thoughtfulness. I like Nurse Nancy's :) suggestion. The one under me is good as well.
