I think it depends on the child. Now days....children have a lot more responsibilities with school. If your child is taking honor's classes, or simply has large amounts of homework....then it would probably be suitable for them to have their own computer. I bought my daughter a laptop when she was in the 7th grade. She was always on mine so much....I thought it was time for her own. You have to watch your children though. What do they spend all their time on when they are using the family's computer? Actually doing homework? Or chatting and viewing social websites (such as myspace) all the time. If they would like a computer for social standards then giving them their own computer is probably not such a great idea.

I completely agree with Venezuela. There are to many dangers out there on the internet today. Make sure you monitor what your teenager is doing on the computer. I know that in school now, you have to use the internet for homework-research, and some teachers post homework online. When your teenager is out on his or her own, that is when they can have there own computer.

I don't think it is a matter of age but of need. If a teenager needs it for homework and is not going to be on a chat room all night and the household computer is being used by a lot of people, then I think their own is in order. As the parent, you should be able to know how your child is planning to use it and you should monitor its use.

OMG!
(Oh, by the by.. I'm 50! and my youngest is 21).
I gave him the most computer access that I could, depending on my financial assets. This is THE age of technology, and to keep our children from keeping up with their peers is akin to keeping them from an education.
(Let me clarify...at this time we were NOT connected to the INTERNET! The word COMPUTER is NOT synonymous with INTERNET. you CAN get your child a computer, and some appropriate SOFTWARE without being connected to the WORLD WIDE WEB.)
NOW... what they are allowed access to is a totally different story. If you are technology challenged, find a co-worker or friend to help you set Internet protocols on your computer, but ....PLEASE do not limit your teen access to a REASONABLE amount of internet access...YOU...I repeat...YOU...are the judge of that.
Good luck!

When they are mature enough. Also are we talking just a computer or a computer with internet? If it has internet I would be very careful and add net nanny and check history to make sure they are using it correctly for their age.

If the teenager can put some money into it....maybe they are ready. They need the responsibility of taking care of it too. And do they deserve it.

Honestly, graduated from high school. Other than that, I would recommend a shared computer for the whole family.
