1. Good Guy:
wants to really protect and serve the community
2. Short Man:

TOO FUNNY. Black rage is right on. I am the good guy.....I have worked with a few psychos and numerous short guys!
A few of the other serious answers are right on. The most popular would be to start off at a local agency as they outnumber all others. County and State would be next up and you can start off in some County agencies in the correctional side or Marine Division and move over to patrol. State would be far be the hardest to get into. You can also go Department of Natural Resources and be a Conservation Officer. You could try DEA, FBI, US Marshalls, CIA, Captial Police, Attorney General Investigator, Treasury Officer, and all sorts of others. Talk with your local agency recruiter and see what they have to offer. They can point you in the right direction.
Above all, be completely honest in background investigations!
You could also go to the private sector and work as a Private Investigator or Computer Forensics Examiner and make the big bucks.

City police, state police, rangers, highway patrol, sheriffs, military police
In a big city--street patrol officers, homicide, Bomb Squad, SWAT, auto theft, Missing Persons(detectives), dive teams, helicopter, motorcycle, bike and mounted patrols, vice, narcotics, juvenile, community relations, K-9 Units, Internal Affairs, burglary, ADR, support personnel such as dispatchers, and others depending upon the needs of the community they serve. Smaller communities usually have patrol Officers, detectives, dispatchers, and access to major case squads made up of detectives to handle more serious crimes such as multiple homicides.
