The chlorpheniramine is commonly prescribed for allergy related itching, but I've found that when used without any other therapy, it's not very successful as a total fix. I'm a big fan of the oatmeal bath - a lot of veterinarians overlook it because it's such a simple remedy, but it's very effective. One of our dogs is chronically itchy during the spring season, and the baths seem to give her tremendous relief. Have you determined what the cause of the itchy skin is? The effectiveness of the antihistamines can really hinge on the root cause of the pruritis. I do agree with the answer above that the chlorpheniramine could make the dog drowsy - it's a human drug that I've taken for insomnia. I hope you have some luck with your itchy boy. Our spring-time itchy dog pulls her hairs out sometimes when she's particularly bad, and it's tough as an owner to watch your dog in such discomfort.

Are you sure it isn't 4 mg every 12 hours? That's the dose we use for a dog that size. Some dogs respond well to it, others don't, but it has very few side effects and it's pretty cheap, so it's worth a try. Good Luck!!

I'm guessing that is for an allergic skin reaction. My labs have had that in weather like we have in Michigan this year. Yes, it will help and no, the dosage isn't off (at least the new one you gave). Don't worry, he'll be better with the meds. Only side effect I noticed was that my girls slept more.

you can also use benadryl. The same stuff you get from walmart. It is way less expensive and does the same thing. You just need it for the anithistimine. Best of Luck
