Such as that becomes apart of your uniform and you get the option of permanent shore duty trauma suffered, is that urban legend or fact?

Being a Navy guy myself, I think that I can shed a little light on this subject for you. A male is allowed to wear an earring in his ear while in uniform for only two reasons. They are as follows:

1. The member has sailed all of the seven seas. HOWEVER, since the Dead Sea is no longer open to international travel, that one is no longer possible.

2. This will answer your question. The member is allowed to wear a one inch diameter silver hoop in the left ear if they are the SOLE SURVIVOR of a Naval Vessel that has sunk. Gold hoop if the member is an officer.

To answer your question on the shore duty, that is an option given to the member to be used if the do so desire. Hopefully that answered you question.

Wow, what an interesting idea.

Apparently, the US Navy never heard of this idea, but there are a lot of other countries out there. Do the Vikings still have a Navy?

Uniform Note (22 May 2006)
A well-known Navy myth is that a Sailor whose ship sinks can wear a gold earring in uniform. Review of current and historical uniform regulations does not indicate that this has ever been an authorized practice. It’s certainly an interesting bit of scuttlebutt, though.

Whatever "WTF" said is definately false. I am in the Navy, and have been for the past 10 years, my father served in vietnam and in the Gulf / Persian War. I think I would know what to do.

That is a urban legend. Females can wear silver ball earrings if enlisted gold if an officer. Males can not even wear earrings on base even not in uniform.
