Light (not just UV) destroys the delicate oils and aromatics from the hops. Exposing the beer to light is how it "skunks" or acquires that nasty skunky smell. Beer in clear bottles should be avoided. Green is a little better at filtering out light, but brown is best...short of simply opaque (like a can). Where a lot of people look down on cans due to the metallic taste they say they impart, an overwhelming majority cannot taste it once the beer's been poured into a glass.

Companies such as Miller, who sell their beer in clear bottles, claim that they've removed the portion of the hops that reacts to light and therefore are safe from this sort of degradation. I'm not sure I buy into that.
