You are limited to the connection speed with dial up.
You can however change a few settings on your modem so that your connection is constant and gives you a more controlled flow of bandwith. Also choosing numbers that are not heavily used will allow you to connect at faster speeds. For instance, if you live in the area code "206" and that area code has 5 numbers from which to choose from, most people will use the first number on the list to connect. Try to use the last number instead. Odds are that more fewer people are connecting using this number. Also choosing a ISP that can handle large amounts of users will also help. I would reccomend staying away from companies such as AOL, Earthlink etc.. as they often have there servers located in a different state from where you are dialing from. Try to choose a ISP that is local and has excellent support for their users.
You can adjust "tweak" your modem by doing the following.

Be careful and remmember that you are using dial up! Not Cable or DSL.
Good luck!
Cheers!

You can't accelerate your connection even WITH a program.
The modem operates as a hardware device - its speed is hardwired into the modem and then there is the phone line situation - how many connections to the main line, how far your are from the server that deals with your modem, how much other traffic there is besides you.
"Acceleration" programs basically just keep track of your surfing and cause the browser to load where you've been, downloading only what is new for that address. Well, it may help. Uses computer resources, though.

Had dial-up - by its nature, it is slooooooooow.
Now have cable - great.
About the best you can do is eliminate wallpaper and screensaver (they run in the background and use memory), reduce the number of programs you load with Startup to those you actually need, and when downloading or updating, close all open programs.

Dial up is limited (by law) to 53kbs. your speed will vary on the quality of your telephone wire. But that is the most you will ever get out of dial up. You should get cable if you wish to have a fast connection and it is available in your area.
