She had the rugs cleaned but doesn't want to put them down for fear that the cats will do the same thing.
Any suggestions on how to keep the cats away from the rugs ?

There are some sprays like "scat cat" that you can probably find at Petco, Petsmart, or Drs. Foster and Smith. These may be able to be used on rugs to deter them from urinating on them. However, there's a good chance the cats will do this again on the same rug, since they've already done it, and the smell is hard to get out. At least, the cats seem to be able to smell it. There is also some spray at places like Petsmart and Petco that you can use to eliminate urine smells from carpet. You can try that, then wash or clean the rugs. Good luck.

Yep, cats just love to mark a new possession. The rugs did not have "their homey smell" on them. And they knew it!

Animals get used to the smell of things in their house and a new object has to be broken in. Silly cats.

I would put down one rug at a time and wait a few. Keep an eye on cats and new rug and deter them from it. They will probably go to resmell the rug for their scent. She should use the old fashioned word of "scat" and let them know to leave her rug alone.

They are smart and know what the deal is! If they try to play dumb have her move litter pan near the rug for a few days until they get the hint.

My kitten had the exact same problem--she kept peeing on the rug, even after we've had her for a couple years. Do you have multiple cats? If so, your cat may feel threatened about using the litter box, because she may smell the scent of another dominant cat. Even if you don't, our solution was to get another litter box, one upstairs and downstairs. She may feel like she has nowhere to go. If that doesn't help, try removing the rug until she learns she shouldn't pee there and use her litter box. Note that females are more sensetive to marks than males, so be patient. Our cat learned within a few days. But just in case, a visit to the vet might not hurt. She could offer you more tips :)

Once they have peed on the rugs no matter how well they are cleaned, cats sensitive noses can detect the odor, and will probably mark them again. I suggest you chuck the carpets and just use the rugs you have now. Cats are very funny creatures. If you love them try not to stress out over the rugs.

Try keeping the cats in a large cage with a litter pan for a few days. Do not let them run loose in the house unattended (only taking them out to play; pet, or feed them). Make sure to keep a close eye on them when they are out of the cage and if they attempt to peed on the rug stop them and return them to the cage. Once they learn to use the litter pan they should continue to use it instead of your mother rugs. The cage should be large enough to accommodate both their bed and litter pan.

Try keepin kitty litter box in the room & ever so often take the catz & put them in the box evenutally they wont do the pee on the rug.

Keep the kitty litter box clean, becauze the catz wont go in it if it iz dirty.

If they do it again try buyin the new spray they hav out which is designed for catz that do the same. Spray the rug with it & the smell of the cat pee will disapear & ur catz are less likely to pee on it.

Hope this helped,
Merry Christmas

There are various products that you can spray on things in order to keep the cats away from them. Try Pestmart, they should have something.

Aw poor you! When cats are marking their territory, they pee! Especially males. My cats female and if she like the smell of something, she rubs her face all over it and leaves goozie...ew!! Don't fret, they are just behaving badly, spray them with a water bottle
