If you are set on Blu-Ray - which many believe will eventually win against HD-DVD (My personal belief is that Blu Ray will win, anyway), then no, it is not useless.
Blu-Ray is supported by more major players in both the movie industry and the consumer technology sector. HD-DVD is supported primarily by the computer side (Microsoft, Intel, etc). I agree, the format war is not near to being over, but most experts contend that Blu-Ray will win out due to more capacity, faster load speeds, and other factors.
HD-DVD is limited to 720p today, but will likely be releasing a 1080p unit before too long.
You can output 720P with a Blu-Ray, and that is still a HD picture. Regular DVDs are 480P at best, so you're certainly not getting a HD picture out of your DVD player. But yes, you can set a native 720 output on Blu-Ray, and if you every upgrade later, you have future-proofed yourself for your next television purchase.

Unfortunately, the two standards each have support by major film studios. For a few years, there will be both BluRay and HD DVD disks, and some movies you want may not be available in the format you can support. Since the disks for either format will usually carry a standard definition copy of the same material, the disks will be interchangeable, but may not play in Hi-Def on your player.
Soooooo...the ugly answer is that if you want the maximum flexibility, you need one player of each type.
Folks old enough to remember the battle between Sony Betamax and Toshiba VHS video tape systems, or Lear eight track vs Phillips cassette will recognize this as deja vu, all over again.

YEP....Your TV only does 720 lines and your Blu-Ray will send out 1080 lines....you'll never see the amazing video that you want to see on a setup like that.
Time to upgrade your TV to 1080P....
