True Champagnes come from the Champagne region of France. Similar wines produced elsewhere are called Sparkling Wine. Brut Champagnes are more dry than those labeled Extra Dry.

Some of my favorites are:
Henriot NV Brut Souverain ($45 - France)
Roederer Estate NV Brut ($19 - California)
Domaine Chandon NV Blanc de Noirs ($19 - California)
Gloria Ferrer NV Brut (19 - California)

Scharffenberger Cellars Brut, it's a Great California Sparkling Wine. It can't be called Champagne because it's not made in the Champagne region of France

Hi,
Here is the list of the best Champagne houses
(and whatever you find it will be ok and maybe you could start with brut champagne):
Billecart-Salmon, Bollinger, Gosset, Alfred Gratien,
Charles Heidsieck, Henriot, Jacquesson, Krug.
Lanson, Laurent-Perrier, Moet&Chandon, Pol Roger,
Pommery, Roederer, Ruinart, Salon,
Taittinger, Veuve Clicuot, Deutz, Paul Bara, Jacquart
***
If you like to take non-expensive Champagne you should
take NV (non-vintage).
I like NV : Taittinger, Billecart-Salmon, Charles Heidsieck and also Jacquart...
If you want something more expensive and special it could be :
Bollinger : La Grande Annee 1997. or
Veuve Clicquot: La Grande Dame 1995. or
Krug (NV king but like vintage=expensive)
These we drank recently and in material world you could not
find something better.
All the best

my fave right now in an icewine and champagne mix here in Canada by Peller Estates called Christelle. The sweetness of the icewine cuts the fizz of the champagne
