My dog is a 10 month old bichon frise cross mini poodle, and has recently been desexed. She now has become very naughty - chewing everything when she didn't used to. She also has lost her 'toilet trained' skills, as she now does her business wherever she feels like it. Is this common? And, more importantly, what can I do to help with the problem?

Well, being a female dog, her hormones have been sent all over the place. It is very common after this type of surgery. Usually when a dog behaves this way, it then has the op and you find it would have calmed down.

The best way to deal with the problem is to go back to square one. Start as if you have just got a brand new dog and go back to how you used to train her. Give lots of rewards for good behaviour, and a stern 'no' when they have done wrong.

I strongly advise you getting a clicker. It is a little gadget that your dog will quickly associate with a reward after hearing the sound. Basically, you start small by getting your dog to sit on command. The minute she sits, you click the device and then reward with a small treat. It won't take long for her to go back to being a wonderfully well trained dog and you can start to enjoy her again.

Good luck and have a great Christmas x

This behavior has absolutely nothing to do with spaying..it has everything to do with the age she is. She is going through what is commonly called the "teen phase".This is a time where you need to step up on her training, be very consistant & persistant and be firm. It is also a time to go right back to basics and make sure to never give any command you can't enforce.

Sometimes it is common. To help this problem, treat it as though she was never trained. Re-train your dog to toilet where you want her to and train her not to chew everything. Good luck!

This is not unusual, and gentle retraining is simple enough. Consider also that she is still a puppy, and growing still in behavior as well as size. How you react to her will can minimize these changes. If your upset over her (neuter) guarantee she will be too... possibly even naughty!

Her body has went through alot of changes and she isn't quit sure what has happened to her. She is just like anyother female when we go through our changes. Give her time she will get over it.

It is common, but human women have hysterectomies also, and you would not say they are de-sexed.
