I have a 19 year year old son that is recently very into Death Metal. I have looked at lyrics of some of his favorite bands. I see a lot of references to satan, killing and mutilation. The references to woman in particular worry me. What are the opinions on this? Is this something I should be worried about? He still comes home on time, goes to work and attends college, those are the pluses. The negatives are the new choice in friends. I am worried and confused any advice would be appreciated!

My 19 year old is listening to the most horrifically depressive music I've ever heard and he's a pretty normal, upbeat, happy kid who dresses in black (as do his friends). I'd be worried if my hubby hadn't been such a huge Doors fan when I met him at 18.

A few lyrics from "The End" by the Doors.......

He went into the room where his sister lived
And then he paid a visit to his brother
And then he walked on down the hall
And he came to a door
And he looked inside
Father
Yes son?
I want to kill you
Mother, I want to. . .

C'mon baby, take a chance with us
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
Doin' a blue rock on a blue bus
Doin' a blue rock C'mon, yeah
Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill

This is the end, beautiful friend
This is the end, my only friend
The end.....

My hubby grew into a pretty normal, happy productive adult who still occasionally rocks out to Jim Morrison. (he's more worried about my former Donny Osmond habit) *lol*

Talk to his friends. You might find out what I did about my sons friends when I got to know them. They're a literate, intelligent, funny bunch of kids who have "normal" tastes in music for their ages.

I'm 16 years old and am very, very into metal. Am I going to do what they talk about in the songs? No, I see the line between reality and fiction. I see that killing and mutilating is wrong, because I was taught this.

Is your son going to do the things portrayed in the music? Who knows? Only you and your son can answer that.

i wouldnt worry too much about it, its probably just a phase. however if his new choice of friends bothers you, you might want to ask him what attracts him to this crowd and this type of music. ask him what he thinks about the lyrics and what they are really saying. i listened to death metal the whole time i was a teenager and even now still like some heavy metal, peoples taste in music changes over the years. i even have a 7 year old who loves ozzy. if he is responsible and dependable then youve raised a fine son and i wouldnt be too conserned about his music choices. if it offensive to you, tell him so, but tell him why. he sounds like he would respect your opinions if he is 19 and still comes home on time he certainly respects your home. talk to him about why he enjoys this kind of music, you might get a whole new prospective on it, i mean really, i listened to it for years and never tried to kill myself or any one else.

I've been with my fiance since highschool and we have a daughter together. He's a wonderful father and a wonderful provider for our family. He went through a phase where he listened to the most awful music *ICP for those of you who've heard of it* it was rap type of stuff that talked about raping women and idolizing serial killers. It gave me the total creeps. He completely outgrew it in a very short while and now listens to music with a basis in classical composition. It's great stuff and I also love it. Your son will probably just outgrow it and even if he doesn't it's not that indicative of him having a bad personality or anything like that. Good luck!

He is 19. The fact that he waited this long to explore that avenue is amazing. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless he starts falling behind. My brother is a very pierced, weird looking fellow, but he holds a good job and takes care of his family. There are worse things someone can be than a fan of death metal...

I would definately tell him he needed to stop filling his mind with evil. and that's exactly what this sorry excuse for music is, pure evil. when your child is filling his head with this much bad, it will come out somewhere. he may be going to work, coming home on time, and attending college now, but given time, this will all change. just like his new choice in friends, there will soon be a new change in behavior. young people that listen to this stuff surely don't realize what they're getting into or they wouldn't ever start listening to it in the first place. people who listen to these groups spouting evil messages to them often end up acting on what they're hearing. and when you have a group of kids listening to it there's even a greater chance that they will act out violently towards someone else or each other.
I watched a documentary on this death metal last year, and for no apparent reason some young men had turned on one of their friends and beat him to death. and all the kids that were interviewed seemed angry or depressed, they talked about killing and suicide, and the majority of them were drinking and using drugs. these kids were scary.
please have a serious talk with your son and try to find out where you might get ahold of a copy of that documentary, and other information on the negative effects of death metal.
I think seeing the documentary would help because it shows young people who got away from that kind of so-called-music and got their lives straightened out.
I sincerely wish you the best, and I will keep you and your son in my prayers.

I wouldnt worry too much, its just music, I listened to death metal and I didnt turn out bad :) I wouldnt worry until he stops being responsible, like missing school, and work, he is 19 after all and you dont really have a say in it any more :)

My husband who is 25 now works full time has two kids and provides very well for his family is and was the same way. It's just music and just because they listen to it doesn't mean they act on it. Some people like rap others country, and some it's deathmeatal. Everyone is different and different rhythms attract all ranges of people.
But this is all just my opinion.

Hello, I am 26 and I have a 2 year old, and I listen to ALOT of death metal, goth metal, dark metal...in my truck with my son, not loud of course, but it is on!
I have listened to this stuff since I was 10 years old!
I was always into metal, and I will be even when Im 80!
I dont think you anything to worry about, unless he starts doing basement human sacrifices!
At least he isnt listening to rap, my lord, that stuff is just garbage!
It could be even worse than that, he could be lisenting to country, or Celine Dion!
Metal music is like an armor, its protects rather than destroy.

if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck smells like a duck, hangs around with other ducks, he's a duckhead. www.goarmy.com its not to late to show him that death and dismemberment is not poetry, pretty, or cute. the smell of cordite and blood and burning flesh is something that i will never be able to forget from my year in iraq. Gwar is a bunch of morons that are just out to make a buck. remind him that if the band members were really as into satan and death as they pretend to be, they would have killed each other in a ritual suicide years ago! They are just a bunch of guys as superficial as N'sync.
