why there is an "S" in the costume of superman?

When they made Superman in 1939, Seiger and Shuster needed a symbol for him that would make him stand out from other superheroes. The "S" was created, and of course it stood for "Superman."

He is the Last Son of Krypton...as a member of the House of El, the "S" is actually his family crest which represents a snake inside a diamond symbolizing strength and protection...

From what Lois Lane tells me, the S stands for something else that she calls him sometimes. It doesn't start with 's' just sounds like it.
