I answered a question similar to this a while back:
If you are starting out, I suggest that you take a look at Mandriva, Ubuntu or Kubuntu.
Mandriva - While I think it is the prettiest of them all, I think the speed takes a hit. It uses .rpm based installers (if you don't know what that is yet, it is fine. You will learn.)
Kubuntu - I personally feel that this is a great start for a beginner. KDE in general is much closer to Windows than GNOME. It is .deb based.
Ubuntu - Ubuntu is the same as Kubuntu, but it has the GNOME interface. I believe that it is the fastest of all of the ones that I have listed.
The best way to find the Linux distribution for you is to try out many of them. All of the ones that I have listed have Live CDs, that will allow you to try out the distribution before you install it.

I have been using Kubuntu now for about three weeks and I can honestly say that this is the best Linux distribution I have ever used. Others I have used include Red Hat 9, and most recently Suse Linux. Which was good but is really inconvenient with the Red Hat Packaging System compared to apt-get.
Good Luck.

There is no such thing as a good version of Linux. Most people tend to gravitate towards Redhat. However, if you are looking for a GOOD free operating system try FreeBSD. It's a bit harder to work with, but more consistent and stable than Linux. It can be found here: http://www.freebsd.org/
FreeBSD® is an advanced operating system for x86 compatible (including Pentium® and Athlon™), amd64 compatible (including Opteron™, Athlon™64, and EM64T), UltraSPARC®, IA-64, PC-98 and ARM architectures. It is derived from BSD, the version of UNIX® developed at the University of California, Berkeley. It is developed and maintained by a large team of individuals. Additional platforms are in various stages of development.

I'm running Ubuntu and can't complain, and I've got some friends that have Red Hat, and it looks pretty enticing...I'm probably getting that soon too. Most can be had for free, look on google for the distro's website, there should be a torrent link for it...

I've used SuSE and it's very good. Only downside is that the installer for the latest version is 6-ish CDs, which is quite a lot of burning. It's definitely worth it.
