A cane. I am 19 years older than my son. Now matter what you say, everyone makes you feel weird and stares at you. That's a whole generation apart in age! If you stay in this relationship you will lie to yourself about many things. Forget the gift and go have fun with young people, believe me, you will be the 40 year old be for long and wish you had lived out your 20's and 30's with those your age, celebrating your youth! It's your time! Not his to steal from you. And he is, believe me.

Are you any good at crafts?

You can make him something that you cannot buy.

Does he have a partiular computer game he likes?
does he play like world of warcraft or city or heroes or Final fantasy?

How about a T-shirt with his favorite character?
I made my husband a "Hord" banner this year.

I don't think you can buy them.

(well, this was easy and cheap to make, so I didnt' mind, even if you can)

Does he have a need that he is not aware of?
like, does he have to wait somewhere for a while every day? give him a pocket game.

Does he drink coffee, but no coffee machine at work?
Buy him a small personal coffee maker to hide under the desk

Think of any little annoyence he must go through the day, and think if there is anything to fill it.

It sound like you really need something that is "it's the throught that counts" if he has everything

It's just an assumption, but I'm thinking that if he has a lot of tools and music and computer stuff he obviously likes that kind of stuff (like you said) and probably isn't done buying all he'll buy. May not be "original", but consider buying him a gift card to Sears (tools), or Best Buy (music maybe), or CompUSA or RadioShack (computer stuff maybe). There's always new stuff coming out so he won't literally have everything. This way he can pick out what he wants and will be sure to get satisfied.

Here's a thought. If he likes flying in either a motorized plane or a glider, give him a gift of one of those. Make arrangements for him to go in the Spring if it's cold now where you live, or if it's warm where you live, arrange it soon. By glider, I don't mean hang glider. I mean a real glider where a plane tows the glider up and when the winds are right, the tow plane lets go. I may not be explaining it properly, but check it out at the local airports. You could arrange for him to go up in a single engine airplane with a commercially licensed experienced pilot. Do research first.
Good luck.

Maybe he would like something hand made, either by you or from a store. Maybe a painting, something leather, or a pillow with a romantic saying on it. Or you could get him a new wallet or a money clip.
