I believe that religion, generally speaking, has been a curse to mankind — that its modest and greatly overestimated services on the ethical side have been more than overcome by the damage it has done to clear and honest thinking. ~ H. L. Mencken

Well since all the atheists answered for the Christians, I, as a Christian, will answer since only Christians know why or whether they consider atheists immoral. The atheists doesn't know the Christian's mind anymore than the Christian knows the atheists mind. I do not consider all atheists immoral. In fact some of them are more kind to their neighbor than many Christians. The questions is not immoral or moral it is belief or unbelief and here again I feel the atheist has the right to not believe it he desires.

I wouldn't call myself "religious", but I am a believer.
I also grew up with an atheist, my Dad. He was a very moral person. I knew and know many highly moral people. If I didn't know that they didn't believe in God, I would think they were Christians.
I am sorry that you know believers that speak that way.
Immoral behavior is practiced by all people. The difference is some people rectify their behavior through repentance, others rectify their behavior for other reasons, and some never rectify their behavior.

Some religions fall into that category (mostly the monotheistic nes.)
the main reason they consider athiests to be immoral is becasue they have this idea that those that are not religious(usually meaninf those that don't adhere to their religion) don't ahve a moral code by which they live. What is comes down to is simply the propogation that anyone that doesn't follow THEIR moral code is immoral whether athiest, pagan, or whatever belief that is not the one of the person making the accusations.
Sad but...that's what things have come down to.

What the Religious have to remember is that they are people who have found another "way". You might say they have the truth, however, one must wonder the depth of their belief if they are there to condemn another. The truth stands. Being religious does not exempt you from immoral acts.

The word, atheist, has a bad connotation or dogma to it. I'd rather just call myself a non-believer. When a child starts growing up and quits believing in Santa Clause, he's not given a label.

Because their morals stem from their religion, thus they cannot conceive of someone being moral without it. It's also a good method for religious leaders to keep a large number of followers.

If religious people don't constantly reassure themselves that they alone know what's right (by slandering atheists) then doubt might slip in and they'd become (God forbid) an agnostic.

Well, you just contradicted yourself... :D
Religions don't slander anyone.
Religious people do. And they are more hypocritical than most athiests I know. I was one of them. I have come to learn the true meaning and nature of Christ: to have a loving and personal, real relationship with God. I don't convict people now, I love them, God's job is to convict. By the way, Jesus had a right to, he was perfect.
So, in conclusion: I wish you blessings.
May God convict you
heh.
