I think Lillith (Adam's first wife) was the snake.
Something about enemity between her posterity and Khava's (Eve's) posterity.

The serpent is Satan.
The tree of knowledge of good and evil is Satan
The dragon is Satan.
Satan has numerous names and plays many roles.
Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
ARE YOU A BIBLICAL ILLITERATE ??
Rev 20:1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
Rev 20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
Rev 20:3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
Devil
Lucifer
son of perdition
little horn
the Antichrist
the Assyrian
the king of fierce countenance
The vile person
the man of sin
the wilful king
that wicked one
lawless one
the prince that shall come
king of Babylon
king of Tyrus
All of these are Satan's names or roles and this is not a complete list.

I agree with Sandie with regard to the bible being allegory, esoteric/hidden truths wrap in what appeared to be the grab of history, there to convey realities of mind and being. Yeshua/Jesus said to turn the scriptures inward that is what is called the Key of knowledge, which the Pharisees rejected in their literalism and ritualistic mindset, appealing the things of God outwardly.
The tree of knowledge however, is the tree of division, not that division wasn't invoked before in the representation of Adam/Eve, but those forces of male/female with is duality diverged further into their respective roles. So the tree of knowledge becomes the tree of duality, which invokes development and understanding by being able to differentiate one thing from another, or better said to evolve the things of mind unto itself. The fruit was the desire for individuality and the tree of knowledge represents the mind in a divided state, which through development and harmonization becomes the tree of life - anointed mind. Anyone how has ever studied Jewish mysticism should know they regarded the tree of life as the mind.

The bible was written in story form to obscure the hidden truths. God does not expect us to believe a snake actually talked. So why should we?????
The snake represents our soul's nature to try and find truth outside of God (adultery). That is the Tree of Knowledge. People are still letting this snake talk and tell them and what is good and bad. The whole of religions are based on "law" of good and bad. That is what you call judging with your carnal mind. God says to judge not lest ye be judged. Shut your soul up and let Christ (bridegroom) do the talking. That is what it means to say NO to the Tree of Knowledge and say yes to God.

First, the snake could talk because it temporally had a spirit in it (Satan's spirit).
It is possible that the snake/serpent was different before then, but in the present time it's practically impossible to know for sure.

Satan possessed the Serpent to tempt Eve to sin. That is why the serpent could talk to her. The snake was already in the garden, because God had created every living thing.

lol. It was a serpent.. which is like a snake with legs. a lizard. It talked because it was possessed by Satan, who can talk.
Cool fact:
Many snakes have markings on thier belly (usually about 4) where, if they had feet, would go.

It wasn't really a snake, it was a fish that had just walked out of the ocean for the first time and during that stage of evolution they had no other words to describe it. Everything slimy was considered a "snake".
Of course all fish can talk, so there's no need to question it further.

It wasn't a snake, it was the planetary prince, Caligastia, whom we know as the devil. He took part in the Lucifer rebellion and was trying to undermine the mission of Adam and Eve.
Incidentaly, Satan is not the same person. There were three of them, Lucifer, Caligastia, and Satan.

The word used for serpent in the Book of Genesis translates to "glistening one".
St. Paul speaks of Satan appearing as an angel of light.
And the Book of Revelation calls Satan "that old serpent" ... "the devil" ... and ... the "dragon".
What do you think?
