So... they're open minded because they refuse to consider the possibility of a God or gods? How does that make sense?

I think they're, on average, about as braindwashed and closed minded as Christians or anyone, for that matter.
I mean, Atheists talk great, but if you tell them there is absolutly no evidence to support their claim, that there isn't a God, they seem to get irritated. Or that Evolution is a Theory and not fact.
In all fairness, a lot of the Atheists I've talked to have a problem like the one a lot of Christians have.
Christians think there either is a God and they're right, or they're wrong and there is no God. It doesn't occour to them that the Hindu might have been right.
Atheists think their right and there is no God, or they're wrong.. and the Christians are right. As if all religions are somehow the same thing as Christianity. It never seems to occour to them that both they and the Christians are wrong.
The first argument I hear anytime I give an Atheist any indication that I believe in God is *always* one focused on Christianity, but I am far from a Christian.
This is a globalized answer, but it was a global question.
Not all Atheists or Christians or Muslims or Confucians or whatever are this way or that.

No I do not feel they are close minded. Actually, I admire them somewhat because a lot of them can be friends and not constantly harass you about being a believer. Just like all of the rest of us some are closed minded. On the whole, I think they are more open minded than some of us Christians. If an atheist doesn't want to hear about Christianity I don't feel he should have to hear about it. I could still be his friend as a person and I feel most of them could be mine if we respected each others boundaries.

Atheist are opened minded, which is why they say "show me proof and I'll believe it!" Although they aren't loss on generalizing people. Religion made Atheism exist, that is, the very superstitious things did, such as talking figurative things for literal occurances. However Atheist make a horrible mistake by saying, if your god existed he would just make himself known. Basically, from a gnostic point of view, you have no one to blame for your lack of self knowledge and lack of direct experience with respect to your higher spiritual nature within. From a Gnostic point of view God can be proven, all things can within you and in fact you are meant to prove these things within yourself, if you are willing to do what it takes then so be it, if not then you don't have much to say.
But then again, Gnosticism isn't a religion and it isn't God-Centered. But my answer is they are not closed minded, since they would believe if they saw proof, but the proof there they are blinded to or they won't apply to prove it in themselves. Too organic in mind to see, but if they did what is necessary to see, then they would. And this necessity is in mindset and life style.

Hm, I honestly think that some of them are. Every religion (yes, I believe atheism is a religion) has people who are close-minded. Those athiests who want Christianity and God (not even the "Christian" God--just a figure everyone can put their own beliefs into) are close-minded bigots. This is a free country; let's keep it that way for everyone, considering most everyone in the US believes in a god in one way or another.

By their nature, ahteists seek evidence and are willing to change their minds accordingly when the evidence is compelling.
That's what the fundamentalists refuse to understand. If their faith had any more evidence than a belief in Zeus, and their creation stories weren't in direct contradiction to the evidence, atheists would change their minds.
But they don't have any of that, nor do they seek it. The bible says so, that's it, no matter WHAT the evidence says.

It depends on what kind of atheist you are referring to...
1. The kind of person who was disappointed by the church and turned away from the beliefs.
2. The kind of person who denies the very existence of God.
or
3. The kind of person who doesn't believe in God until someone can prove to him or her there is one.
What is really wonderful about these people is that when they do become Christians, they are more dynamic and bold than people who have been believers for most of their lives.

I think they're closed minded because they're not willing to admit the possiblity that there might be a God.

I heard a Baptist preacher preaching (screaming and sweating) about a conversation he had with a non-believer, and the preacher yelled at us that the guy he was talking to said that the preacher was closed-minded, and the preacher yelled out, "Now you get it!" He was actually proud to be closed-minded. Wouldn't even hear of anything else.

of path i could settle for the existence of a deity if shown scientifically. even nonetheless, it may make little difference to me. i'm an apatheist; i do no longer think faith has a function to play in my existence. information of the existence of a deity would not compel me to worship pronounced deity or persist with the dictates of the religion in line with that deity. EDIT: yet another clarification why i would not care to permit that impact me very lots is that scientific theories at the instant are not perpetually valid, and the invention of any conflicting information could require a revision of the view that a particular deity exists. the reality that "scientific information" isn't an absolute indication of its 'actuality' is one reason i could proceed to be skeptical nonetheless.

no. the opposite. some may have additional questions that some highly religious people may not accept, and right away, theyll call athiests close minded or blasphemous because the athiest are challenging their religion. the brain weashed religious zealoouts (not all xtians, the crazy bible thumpers)are close minded, because they feel if you dont follow them, you are doomed.
