a relaxer can actually be more damaging than straightening because of the harsh chemicals used..also, they grow out pretty quickly, so i would stick to a flat iron.

my hair is verrryyy thick and curly, but i manage to get by by doing these things:
instead of using your flat iron every day, try every 2-3 days and wash it every 3-4 days (unless its very oily or dandruffy)
also, invest in good styling products/heat protectants that will hold your style and protect against damage.

[my hair looks very healthy even tho i straighten it every 3 days because i use an awesome gel from Vo5 called "make it straight"; try it out, see how it works..you can buy it at walgreens]

good luck!

If you do get one make sure a stylist does it. It's really easy to mess it up yourself. Make sure you space them out if you do them too close together your hair will fry for sure. i got a relaxer two or three times last year and it is still growing out and there are certain spot where i had some breakage. just be careful it's a big commitment if it's not done correctly all your hair could fall out. Good Luck

A relaxer will definitely help, you should speak to a stylist as to which relaxer is best for your hair. There are varying strengths, and you wouldn't want to use one that is too strong for your hair.
