It seems like we have one of two choices to make when we consider the origins of God and this universe. Either God has always existed and He made this universe or matter has always existed and people "made up" God.

Personally I think that it makes more sense to believe that a supernatural, extra-dimensional being brought matter into existence than it does to believe that the 4 dimensions we are aware of are all that exist and that matter has just always been here so it's just one of those unexplainable mysteries that we have to accept at least for now.

Saying that the universe came into existence because of a "big bang" just pushes the problem further back into time. You still have to explain where the matter and energy came from to make a "big bang". To me saying the universe started from a big bang sounds a lot like saying that God stepped out of another dimension and said "Let there be light...."

Leaving "religion" out of it, I think the concept of God arose when human development had progressed to the point that we didn't just see the sunset, we appreciated it's beauty. Then we wondered how it got that way. I believe it's human nature to try and find the origin of things, (hence, your question). There is a battle between science and religion to prove the origin of mankind itself. Did we evolve, or just appear one day at God's whim? Would we believe the science if proof was obtained? Or steep ourselves in religious brainwashing, and deny the validity of the proof because it doesn't jibe with long-held theological beliefs?

There are some answers in the Bhagavad Gita:

When Arjuna, a devotee of Lord Krishna, was granted the vision of Krishna's Universal Form, he says: "I behold no beginning, no middle and no end to You." 11,16 Bhagavad Gita

"You are without origin, middle or end." Arjuna, 11,19

"O Arjuna,.....I am the beginning, the middle and the end as well of all living entities." Lord Krishna, 10,20

"Of all creations I am the beginning and the end and also the middle." Lord Krishna, 10,32

Another when Krishna says He has always existed:
"He who knows me as the unborn, as the beginningless,..." 10,3

I also came across this verse in the Bhagavad Gita:
"My dear Arjuna, only by undivided devotional service can I be understood as I am, standing before you, and thus be seen directly. Only in this way can you enter into the mysteries of My understanding." 11,54

It is only when we give God our true devotion and love can we begin to really understand its mysteries and nature of existence. Reading about it is not enough. We must experience it too. Amma says that how does one begin to explain the taste of sugar to one that has never tasted it? Describing it has its limitations. We must also taste the sugar in order to know what sugar is. Same thing with understanding this concept of God as having no origin. These verses above alone do not even begin to come close to giving one the experience of understanding God as "unborn, beginningless."

Well said. Why should God be free from the infinite regress that everything must have a beginning or a creator. Tell that to God's mum.

If God ever had a beginning, then how are we to ever realize our immortal state? God is, has been, and will be, and this is God's beginning and end. When this is understood, then the question of where does God come from vanishes. A finite sense or thought is incapable of touching spiritual truths.

Everything in this world has to come from something. God however, is out of this world. He created it. God has always been, he has no beggining and no end. it is a concept that everyone finds hard to understand because we don't understand the concept that he lives outside of time, he created time, on mount siani when Moses asked god who he was, god replied "I Am that I am, meaning he just is.

One of the best Q's so far. God is energy and not human-like. God is the forces of nature and the laws of physics which are eternal and fixed. He has none of the dodgy human qualities of jealousy and vengefulness described in some of the brainwashing holy books. the humanesque God comes from humans. Peaceful people create peaceful Gods and the warriors make any excuse to kill other people in the name of God.
Humans are born with an inbuilt belief in the supernatural. It stemmed from our misunderstanding of natural phenomena such as earthquakes, storms and volcanoes making us believe that some one must be angry (and powerful) so, I'm human and if I am powerful and angry, someone's gonna get hurt so I better make offerings of animals. virgins etc to appease 'God' in case I get hurt.
We are primates and pack animals who live within hiarchies and therefore we believe there must be someone more powerful than us being in control and treating us like children needing to give us rules and regulations (religion) to guide us.
It's so crazy that they even created miracles to convince us of the existence of God.
God is your higher self so try to be the best you can and forget about that fake, the Devil. God and the Devil are just choices you make so make positive choices and harm no one

Nice to find someone who thinks for themselves and is not brainwashed and browbeaten by established religious institutions..
It is not a sin nor a hanging offence to pick holes in religion tho there are many who would like it to be.

The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins (A Current Best Seller)
will give you more food for thought.

OK by the way humans did NOT create the universe god did and god was here.. there is nothing to explain it he was just here and you have to believe that it is in the bible Genesis 1:1 in the beginning god create the heavens and the earth. Phil. 4:8 all things are possible through Christ. hope that helps !!!!
