why do poodles hump things so much?

It's not just poodles, our Chihuahua tries it, too. Our vet said that this is generally a dominance thing, and some females even try it. Tell him, "No," and, if he's tall enough, knee him in the chest, just like you do when you're teaching him not to jump up on you. Don't get overly excited about it; he'll think, "Aha! I can get a reaction with this," and then he'll use it as an attention-getting activity.

Make sure your dog knows that you're the "alpha" and that he's low dog (chicken?) in the pecking order.

Our Chi doesn't do it to me anymore. But he still tries to hump my brother's leg. Guess that makes me the alpha.

It isn't just poodles... Is he neutered? How old is he? Have you thought about maybe, um, I don't know, getting him fixed??? A lot of people, esp men, say they don't want to neuter their dogs because it isn't fair, but imagine the frustration of having all the equipment, all the hormones, all the drives and desires, and never being allowed to use them. Wouldn't you hump everything that held still long enough??? That hardly seems fair, now does it???? Sexual behavior is largely learned, so neutering after the behaviors are learned won't necessarily extinguish the behaviors.

lol! I don't think it's just the poodles. My friend has a Jack Russel. I think it's just the male in them. I've found that male dogs of all bread do that. And even some females. If I every get another male I'll have him fixed.

Because he needs his balls whacked off. Take him to a vet for a neuter surgery. Then he won't hump things anymore!
