I have a recipe that I want to make that calls for either fresh or frozen cranberries...but EVERY store is out...the fruit needs to be able to hold up to heat because you bring them to boil in a mixture that is poured over a torte...am thinking that strawberries would be best substitution...

Strawberries will go "mushy" when you boil them...
Your best bet would be a small round berry such as red currants.
If you can't find fresh berries, you can always use a fruit preserve, (not a jelly, as it wouldn't have the whole fruit). Bring it to a boil, and pour over your torte, it should work well. (don't add anything, just heat it slowly until it starts to bubble)
(You may be able to find dried berries cranberries, red currants or cherries... these would also solve your problem, the dried berries regain their plumpness in the liquid you boil).

There are lots of fruit you can make compote (boiling with liquid abd sugar into thick syrup) with:

blueberry
strawberry
cherry
apple
pears
apricots
pineapple

Pick the one that you think would go best with whatever flavor torte your're making...

i'm particular you could desire to alter purely approximately any berry in this recipe with the two sturdy consequences. i does not concern appropriate to the tartness...if she rather loves sparkling raspberries, then you already understand she loves tart issues.
