I have two chihuahua's one is a year old the other 6mos...they won't stop pooping in their cage! It's so disgusting, i've tried everything...training pads, putting them out late at night and early morning, picking up their food at 2pm, and spanking with a newspaper. Nothing seems to work...they are good about not doing it on the floor...but i can guarantee i will find some in their bed in the morning...i'm at my wits end! What can i do?

Poopy guy:
You Hit a dog?? You like spanking them?
No wonder you have no clue how to "train". Simply said,
to condition a dog of any age, try being HUMANE first.
Soiling is normal for disorganized households. and I doubt your cages help either.
Try a certified course in training or at least a good book on dogs.
And if anyone thinks striking a animal with anything, boot, rolled paper, etc., will solve a behavior problem, consider the source.

Most dogs will refuse to soil their beds if at all possible.

As a rule of thumb, and there are exceptions, by four months, a dog can "hold it" for one hour per month of age, up to age eight months and eight hours, give or take. Don't expect your dog to be able to go more that eight hours without relieving its self. It may be possible, but don't expect it.

How much time do they spend in their crate? If it is too long, well, when you gotta go, you gotta go. On the other hand, if they're never in it , they might not even know that it's their bed, they might think it's their toilet area.

Also, it could be that their crate is too big. If the crate is too big, the Chihuahuas may think of it as a combination bed/litter box.

Maybe they just like the comfort of being able to do their "business" without having to go outside. Our Chihuahua hates the rain and going outside after dark. He's litter trained.

When training an animal the most important thing is Consistency.
Crate training is suppose to be house-training your dog in a small crate (only big enough that the animal can go in and lie down, no bigger) so that he/she does not want to contaminate their sleeping area with feces. Depending on the age of the animal, you should let it out and take it to a designated potty area (always the exact same area) about every 4-6 hours, or up to 8hours for an older animal that is already potty trained.
So, start over! Get a small crate and be consistent. If you have your dog on a schedule, he/she will know when they get to go out and you should have no problems.

To be quite honest I have no idea how to answer your question. I never crated my dogs. My message is to the people that left the nasty answers here for you (the ones that are hidden and a couple of others). There was no sense in being asinine. She had an honest question and wanted honest answers. Your answers were not funny nor helpful....but you knew that when you submitted them....If you ever treated or did that to an animal it should be done to you .OH what am I talking about it was your idea it should be done to you!!!!!!!

Take the advice about training.
They are old enough they should be able to hold it at night.

Please, don't deprived them of food. They are small dogs and are susceptible to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) if they haven't eaten, especially puppies.

Also, have them checked out by your vet. There could be a physical reason they are pooping at night. Worms or other metabolic diseases could be the culprit.

Id say you need to lock them out of their cage for a few days. Everytime you let them out and they go to the bathroom, praise them and give them a treat. You may want to keep a close eye on them as to see they dont go in the house. Let them out 3 times a day and hopefully they'll catch on and eventually you wont have to let them out as often. If they go in the house, scold them and put them in their cage. That'll show them that if they go in the house, they dont get any of the fun. I tried. good luck.

When you train puppies they tell you to keep them in their cages at night and if they go in there now thats perfectly normal. Just keep working with them and ask your vet for advice.
