I hear people say "until you die!"

My orthodontist keeps telling me "use them for a few more months" every time I go to him. Now, I feel like he's just making me take it bit by bit. I'm really fed up with using these. It's been almost 3 years. I need to see my orthodontist one of these days, and I'm fed up with having to see him once in a few months too.

I wonder if one really has to keep using retainers for life. I want only orthodontists' input on this, please.

Yes you should wear it every night while you sleep. Because our molars are slowly pushing against the rest of our teeth. This is called mesial drift. Have you ever seen a picture of someone in their 20's. Their teeth are straight. And then you see a picture of them in their 70's or 80's and their front teeth are now crowded together. Mesial drift. Wearing you retainer every night for the rest of your life will keep your teeth from moving. That is why its called a retainer. To retain the position of your teeth.

Look, Im not an orthodontist, but I know about this stuff. My friends mom had braces when she was a kid, never followed the rules and everything. So it took a while to get straight teeth. Then, she barely ever wore her retainer, and now, her teeth are crooked again. Your parents/you/your guardian just spent at least a thousand dollars on orthodontic treatment and you shouldnt throw it all down the drain, loosing money & a perfect smile, just because you are annoyed with wearing the retainer.

I am also not an orthodontist, but you need to wear your retainer, even if it is annoying. Next time you go to your orthodontist, strictly ask him/her how long and how often you have to wear it, whether it be every other day all day, every day all day, or every night. You won't regret wearing it in the future, you will have perfect teeth. Happy Holidays.
