If you are referring to Christianity, then within the context of Christianity, I believe it is because our souls are immortal - they can never cease to exist.
I am assuming that in the realm where our souls exist there are two places you can be - in heaven where God is most present, or in hell where God is least present. So a soul cannot be nowhere, since it exists it must either be in heaven or hell.

I wish I knew. It makes god an egotistical sadist doesn't it? I don't believe it personally. If god exists at all He/She is better than that. How could such a creature want or need anything at all? After all, most people aren't even that bad. Not much of a god is it? Believe in me or else!
Sounds a bit questionable to say the least. Still, fear is what it was all concocted for in the first place. Nothing controls the masses like it.
Time to wake up, value each other and rely upon reason and logic. Lets leave finding out about gods existence until we die.

No one told you? We're already living in one of the Hell worlds.
The reason is; everyone and everything is one with God (part of God). God itself would have to cease exiting if any part of it stopped existing.
God doesn't condemn anyone to Hell, only humans seeking to control other humans condemn people to Hell.
Hell is an illusion, just like life as a human is an illusion.

God is a Just God
That means he deals Justice
like Karma, if i punch someone in the face then the person i punched should punch me in my face, thats fair, thats Justice.
If somebody Rejects God, then it would be just for God to reject that somebody. God is Love and Kindness, Friendship, Peace, Holy and all other good things. if there is something good around, it's because God willed it to be there. Now if somebody rejects God, they will lose all of that because God brings all good things. we call the condition where God is not there 'Hell'.
like Evil is not a thing, but the deficiency of Good. Hell is not a place, but the deficiency of God's presence.
Job 34:12 - "Of a truth, God will not do wickedly, and the Almighty will not pervert justice."
For people to just stop existing would not be just. God brings life as an immortal soul. he made each one of us and he made each one of us unique. if you reject God, who is forgiving, God will reject you!
Mark 9:47b-48 - "It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, 'where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.'"
This is quite simply Justice!

There are two choices because God gives us a freewill to choose to receive Him or not. He doesn't want to twist your arm to accept Him. God is God, King of King, Lord of Lord's. He makes all the major decisions for this earthly realm. He's pretty nice to let us choose. Sin can send someone to hell, too, if your don't ask for forgiveness not just rejecting the Lord. There are many motal sins. Our freewill is very valuable to us. We get to choose, whether we want eternal life or do we choose death with no hope. The choice is yours to make for your life.

To have no faith in God, maybe because of something that has happened in a person's life. miss-Giulded.
But to go to the lower levels of Heaven, people call hell. It does not mean you are their for ever. You can work your way out though God.
The soul cannot die.

Do you mean people or souls?
People CAN stop existing. It's called suicide.
As for souls, I imagine it's because one is not allowed or able to control one's soul.
I think there's probably a lot more than two options. Considering no one has proof that God exists, I think limiting ourselves to two options and not exploring others is rather sad.

Stopping existing is what people who don't believe in any religions already accept; you have to have something much scarier than that, like the threat of eternal torture (nice morals there, god) to scare people into belief.

Hell is the common grave of mankind. Everyone dies, everyone goes to Hell. However, the decisions you made in life will determine whether you are resurrected or not. Hell is not a place of torment, it is a place of non-existence. The Bible tells us that the living know they will die but the dead are conscious of nothing.

Jesus warned of Hell more than He spoke of Heaven. He died for us to save us from what? Nothing/nonexistance? No. The soul goes on. Hell is a place for souls who choose not to be with God. God won't be in Hell to punish anybody.
