The Christian view that atheists (and people who follow other religions) cannot be good people is based on the concept of original sin and the idea that all people are sinners, even babies, and that we have to accept Jesus as our savior in order to have any chance of getting to heaven, and even then we'll still be sinners.

They think that all morals and goodness come from God, not from reason. They cannot wrap their minds around the concept that people will do what is right just because it's right, because they think that, left to their own devices, people will always sin.

Remember, not all Christians are this way...

It's because that although you may claim to have morals, the only time I'm really aware of athiests is when they're being overly critical and negative. Whatever positive morals you have did not spring from a vacuum, nor did you figure them out on your own. They were handed down over generations and evolved, and not over generations of athiests.

I think it's hilarious that atheists will so easily stereotype Christians as all believing in creationism when in fact most of us don't. Most of us even believe in a faith that evolves to maintain relevance as society changes. You may feel that the rate of change is far too slow, but your lack of patience is not my problem.

On the other hand--and this is the really hilarious part--you believe in evolution, but can't wait to tear down the morals that have evolved in order to create a new set in the form that you believe they should exist. In other words, "intelligently" designed! How ironic is that?

It is all about natural selection. It is in a religion's best interest to vilify other religions or philosophies (like atheism).

Religions that do not vilify other beliefs/philosophies run the risk of their members looking towards others with an open-mind. This increases the odds that those members will "leave the faith". The gradual loss of membership means that these religions will not grow as fast or as hardy as a "hardline" religion.

Religions that vilify other beliefs and do not allow their members to look into them with an open mind do not run such a risk. These religions will retain their membership.

In other words, when you look at the larger picture, religions naturally gravitate towards intolerance because the ones that are more open are more likely to die out.

Because they erroneously believe that ethics and morals cannot exist without God. They are also ignorant of the fact that the concept of ethics and morals existed thousands of years before Christianity.

Atheists have never raped, had slaves, caused war? I'm sure there are alot of "good" atheists. There's alot of good Christians, Muslims, etc., but their eternity is what's in question.

As a Christian I don't think atheists can not be good people. I used to be an atheist (though didn't use that word).

I know several good people who claim to be atheists and consider a couple of them to be my closest friends.

Slavery, rape, causing war, bigotry and hatred are not Christian morals. As a recent example I point to the former USSR - atheist country that did all of the things you mention.

God does not cause war. satan does. And by the way... satan is the father of all who do not believe in and serve God and who do not accept Jesus as their personal Savior.

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

You are either with God or you are with satan. There is no middle ground. satan and his children have no morals.

Atheists can be good people. But being good people doesn't bring eternal salvation.
