Ok, please read the entire question before answering.

I have a system that I am "donating" to another family member, I have had a lot of personal stuff on the system and I would like to do a low level format to it, and reinstall the operating system, which again was windows xp PRO.

I have somehow misplaced my windows xp PRO cd, but I do have a valid license (yes, an actual license that I DID pay for) so my question is, if I just have a friend burn me a copy of his windows xp PRO cd could I do the low level format and reinstall the operating system? Or is my product key ALSO valid for the home edition, because I actually DO have a cd available for it (basically I would be using the windows XP PRO license on a windows xp HOME version).

Thanks for your time, any person that does not answer the question will be reported.

Maybe. License keys are set for the various different types of Microsoft Windows XP Professional released, and cannot be used with different versions.

For example, the license key for a Full Boxed copy of Microsoft Windows XP Professional will not work with an OEM Microsoft Windows XP Professional CD, or a Volume Licence Microsoft Windows XP Professional CD.

I'd say just give it a go. You've got nothing to lose! If all goes wrong, you can actually purchase replacement media. Its only about £25.

I tried to do this and it did not work. I have two computers, each with a different windows XP pro license. Here's what I tested for you:

1.) I took the Windows-CD for computer A and put it in computer B.
2.) When prompted, I selected "install windows" or something similar to that.
3.) When asked for my CD-Key code, I entered the CD code for computer A, even though the disk was from computer B.
4.) The program said the code was invalid.

I believe your best bet would be to use your buddy's CD and use your existing key. But, if your not busy (and since you'll be doing a format of the operating sys drive anyway) I would give it a try with the home edition. If it doesn't work, you can always just reinstall with another format (quick) using your buddy's CD.

My advice would be to get a program called easy reload, and wipe out your hard drive first then reload windows. As long as your friend has XP pro you should be fine.. Just use the license key once it loads, but i would highly recommend wiping out the hard drive first.. Due to the fact that all your info is on there..
