I have managed this by crushing the pill to powder, mixing it with butter and rubbing the butter into the fur on the cat's front leg. The cat indignantly licked off the butter and the powered pill and swallowed it all! They will always try to lick liquid or powdered medication off their fur if you mix it with butter or peanut butter - I found that ordinary butter works best.

My cat had a UTI and needed 5 weeks of antibiotics. Those pill-shooters are more trouble than they're worth.
And unless your cat is pretty stupid, he'll get wise to having it hidden or crushed in food very fast.
My vet showed me how... I straddled my cat so that I had her immobilized with my legs (the vet didn't show me that part, but she is a *big* cat). Then pulled her head backwards. With one hand, thumb and index finger, I pried her mouth open at the corners. With the other hand, I coated the pill in a little butter (to help it slide down) and shoved it as far into her mouth as possible. Then, still holding her head way back, I closed her mouth and stroked her throat until I could see that she swallowed. She was not able to bite me like this.
Good luck. Hope your kitty feels better soon!

If there is someone else that you live with try this, you have to be in control, let her know who is boss, wrap your cat in a towel, to where none of her paws can get out, take your middle finger and your thumb and put them on their jaws and push in, it will force their mouth to open, it will not hurt them, some cats are stronger than other and you might have to push a little hard, but it will not hurt them, trust me, once you have their mouth open put the pill in their mouth and keep the cat in your arms still wrapped in the towel and hold him for a minute or two, check their mouth and if the cat still didnt swallow it, it should start dissolving. Just hold her a little longer till it is gone. But under no circumstances, never dissolve the pill in water and force it in their mouth, I was told by a vet that when they are forced to drink things it is not a guarantee that they will drink it and they will let it go down their air pipe into their lungs

Hi Ann...cats are clever enough to eat around the pills mixed within food even such as the pill pocket. Here's an instructional video by Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine of Feline Health on how to pill a cat (also with a pill syringe and how to properly restrain a cat): http://www.felinevideos.vet.cornell.edu/pill_or_capsule/
if it's a liquid antibiotic: http://www.felinevideos.vet.cornell.edu/liquid_medications/

as quickly as I pill a cat that would not choose for to be pilled, I take a seat on the floor with the cat. I placed the cat in between my legs so as that as quickly because it starts to decrease back up it runs right into a leg and can't. I wrap one provide up the remarkable of the top and sense for the cheek bones on the two fringe of the eyes. as quickly as I even have my arms on the two sides (thumb on one area, arms on the different) I firmly carry the top and gently raise the nostril in the direction of the ceiling. as quickly as the nostril is pointed directly up, usually the mouth with slightly open. i exploit the hand that has the pill to word a small quantity of rigidity to the small incisor tooth between the front canines to softly pry open the mouth. I then drop the pill down the roof of the mouth. If the nostril is pointed appropriate up on the ceiling, you have the skill to drop the pill appropriate down the decrease back and it will land down interior the throat. in case you omit slightly it's going to be on the decrease back of the tongue. you ought to attain a finger in and pa the pill extra down the throat. close the mouth and carry it closed on an identical time as you enable the cat return it somewhat is head to the traditional place. this could rigidity the pill extra down the throat. at this factor I oftentimes enable up slightly on retaining the mouth closed to work out if the cat will lick it somewhat is nostril. while it does, it skill the pill has been swallowed. in the experience that your kitty won't lick it somewhat is nostril, you could attempt drying the nostril off along with your palm to entice the cat to swallow the pill and then lick the nostril. some people desire to get a "pill gun" which holds the pill some foot faraway from the set off so as that they'd get it a great way sufficient down the throat till now pulling the set off and having the "gun" enable bypass of the pill that's a skill that should be discovered. in case you go with for prepare, get some cat treats and paintings on it, that way in case you fail, the cat has something yummy in it somewhat is mouth and could forgive you for the guy dealing with. do no longer forget approximately to compliment the kitty when you pill (or prepare pilling) her. Being pilled is amazingly undignified, and cats could be reminded you think of they're very dignified.

hahaha, I laugh because I had a dr. prescribe me something for my cat also, she was really skittish anyway and trying to get her to swallow something is virtually impossible!!! I've been there.
I had to crush the pill and hide it in tuna, and from what I remember, she got smart to that game too.
Ask the dr. for liquid to put in wet cat food.
Or if you really try, you can give the cat the pill. Have someone hold her paws and you have to open her mouth with one hand and shove the pill past her back teeth with the other. It's harder than it sounds, I know!!!!
Good luck.

ok, wrap that cat up in a blanket, really tight , get its legs in there.
then pry open its mouth, no it wont hurt and on the side of the jaw, there is a little pocket , just shove it in there.
if that don't work, you might haveto get a pill popper from the vet-yes they have them there and should give them to you for free.
try cutting it up in small pieces and putting it in things like steak pieces or canned cat food.

My vet sells pill poppers for about $3.00. It is kinda like a syringe, but it has a spot to put the pill in, then you press the plunger of the popper until the pill goes into the cat's mouth.

I've tried putting the pill itself in the food by my cat just ate around it. Try mashing it up and putting it in his food (just like we do for little kids who can't swallow pills). This should work. If not, try prying open his mouth and dropping the pill in and hold his mouth shut until he swallows it. I hope this helps.
