First of all, congrats on the new job.

If you want a nice place to live, easy commute to NYC and able to walk places, then I would recommend Hoboken, NJ. There are a lot of bars, clubs for entertainment, shopping, coffee houses, and quick ride to NYC via train, bus or ferry.

The apartments are not cheap, but the area is great!

Clifton does not meet your needs, except for maybe housing costs. IF you need to get places, you can't walk anywheres.

I know people that are happy living in Jersey City. b/c of the activity, malls, and easy commute to NYC.

I went to Clifton because there's a riding stable there, but I went at night and got horribly lost and had to wait an hour for a bus. You will definitely need a car. As someone else said, Hoboken is a better bet if you want to live in NJ, and you wouldn't need a car.
