i got my ears pierced 2 and half years ago, everything was normal until 2 months ago my ears started getting itchy. The area around the hole would become red and a yellowish liquid would start to form. Everytime I take the earings out, the liquid would form as scabs. So this cycle repeats many times. I tried rubbing alcohol and it didnt work. I dont understand why after more than 2 years this would happen. I still wear the still earings as before. So is this a bacteria infection or something? and how can I treat it? Im afraid if I dont wear my earings any longer the holes would close up.

It's possible that it's an infection, but it could also just be an allergy.

Try soaking the earring (or at least the back if it's a chandelier-type) in alcohol. Also, everywhere that pierces ears sells a special cleaner for piercings. Go visit either a Claires or even Wal-Mart jewelry counter to see where you can get it; I think it's called Bactine.

If it is an allergy, you can try nickel earrings, and others that are hypo-allergenic. I've never tried coating it with clear fingernail polish like one poster suggested, but it's worth a shot. Usually cleaning them really well works for me.

Nothing else, visit a doctor; he may be able to give you an antibiotic to kill the yellowish stuff.

Good luck!

It could be possible you scrapped or injured the tissue inside the piercing with an earring. Are you cleaning the earrings properly? I would go to a piercing store like at the mall and buy some cleaning solution that they have for new piercings because if their is a tear inside the piercings alcohol only eats away newly developing tissue and will cause it to take an extremely long time to heal in which it can keep getting reinfected when you remove and put in earrings. I would say treat it like a new piercing for a while, get the milder cleaning solutions at the piercing shop so as not to harm the newly developing tissue and use triple antibiotic ointment on the lobe. When you go into the shop they should be able to give you more advice.

The first thing that springs to mind is what type of piercing were you inserting? If after two years you have put a new earring made of a different metal, you may be allergic to it. Some people cannot tolerate silver for instance, but are OK with gold. If you are using new earrings, try going back to something you could wear before. On the other hand, you may have built up an intolerance to a metal over the years, so if you are wearing the same earrings, try a different metal. You see where I am coming from. Last of all, sterilise your ear rings in hot water with antiseptic solution. If it is a bug, you may be re-introducing it every time you insert them.

Wear gold only earrings until symptoms heal. Use peroxide on a cotton ball several times a day. If it happens after you try other earrings again, then you probably have an allergy/sensitivity to cheap metals. I have the same probablem. Good luck!

You have an allergic reaction to the metal in the earrings you are wearing.
If they are not gold....they will do that.
But you could also have an allergic reaction to gold.
Try to coat the post with clear nail polish.
That should stop the reaction.

why be afraid the holes close up, you could always get them pierced again in the future. Go to the doctor and see what he/she thinks.
