IF the wires are hooked up according to a code, the red woud be the hot wire, and the white would be negative, or ground.

Any wires could be wired up in any manner...get a multi-meter and check them, before something goes wrong...

need to know more information, what the wires for?? you need to bell them out (test them) to determine your lives and neutrals.

Depends on if you are using AC or DC. If its AC then the Red is hot if its AC they both are.
