I would get another opinion. Surgery is permanent and irreversible. I guess it depends on how serious your back problem is. I know that if it's the lower back, and if you are really incapacitated and your back goes out often...if it's REALLY painful and you just can't live like that...then have it. The other reason you should have it is if your bowels and bladder are affected...those same nerves can affect the muscles etc that control those functions...and it will only get worse.
Get a second opinion and a third if needed. You will only be more educated on getting more opinions and may find you prefer one surgeon over another anyhow...and what matters is the surgery and that they do it right and don't damage anything else. You want the best qualified to do it.
Some people who've had it done say it's so much better...the pain is gone...and that is really what it's about.
That said if they don't do it right it could be worse. So you have to weigh it.
You might consider if losing weight or doing certain exercises or physio might make it better and try those first off.
You don't have to do anything. It's your body!!

No you dont have to have one. You dont have to accept any medical treatment you may disagree with as long as you are adult and competent to make your own decisions. I dont think that you would lose your benefits but I'm not 100% certain either as you dont say what condition it is or what benefits you receive.
The surgeon wouldn't suggest surgery though unless it really will help so I would try and find out as much as possible about the operation or possible alternative treatments. Try Googling back surgery.

Your doctor is giving his or her best opinion. You could also try alternative therapies to alleviate the pain, but as best I can tell they just put off the surgery anyway.
I had a discectomy and fusion last March and I am SO happy I did so. I felt better from the moment I woke up from the anesthesia.
But your insurance company cannot deny you benefits because you don't want to have an operation. Just keep in mind that your insurance company may not completely cover alternative therapies.

I know you are terrified...a lot of people share your boat! Surgery is never a pleasant option, but it might be required to take care of your problem. A second opnion is always a wise move when surgery is suggested, if you have any doubts at all. It is always your option to choose OR ot not to chose it, and an insurance company cannot drop you because you said no! My husband had back surgery 18 years ago and he i so glad he did. They can give you pain medication in and out of the hospital and now, most surgeries can be done on an out-patient basis...in in the AM out in the PM. Good luck.

No you dont have to have this surgery if you dont want to,you are the patient and you have rights as a patient.Surgery is always the last option especially with bck surgery,as complications can happens and also having further problems later on in life bck ache, numbness etc.Usually when peolpe have problems with there bck ,patients have various off tests, physio, bck supports etc to see if any off this work first even before the consultants decides to operate.Surgery is always the very last option,if the consultants can get away with it they will.So see what options there are first with the consultant before you go down this rd.My friend has had 4 operations on her spine and she still gets a lot off problems now,so please think about this before you say yes to surgery.Good Luck

no, why should your benefits stop, no operation is 100% succesful and always has risk side effects, you must make the decision yourself , are you likely to benefit significantly from this operation , to your present condition, or do the risks outweigh the benefit, it is a decision you need to make but dont let the benefits situation worry you, when no operation is guaranteed
