Considering they have better resources in Qatar than in Iraq, where I am now, I'd tell you it won't be that hard at all. They have voice over internet protocol phones that make calling home very cheap, they have email, mail, and video conferencing by webcam and video mail. Staying in touch is more a matter of what his operational schedule is like and whether he spends a lot of time in secure facilities that don't let you send personal info out while you are in there working.

I was in Qatar for 4 days of my 11 months in Iraq. What a beautiful place!! They know how to live. All of the Qataris get money from the government from oil revenues.

What a great duty station. Awful hot, though.

Qatar is were Service members go on pass from Afghanistan, Iraq, and Kuwait, so its pretty nice. It's safe (they don't get combat pay) and they have lots of amenities, such as access to internet/telephones, malls and beaches.

But, I don't want to downplay his role in the war on terror. Everyone has their part to play in the big scheme of things even if they are not stationed in a combat area like Afghanistan or Iraq.

I went there on a 4 day pass and heard that some people, mostly Air Force, actually have their family fly to Qatar to visit.

Your hubby will have different ways of communicating with you, phone, e-mail, voice messages etc, You are still young and may not realize the hardship we had in the Korean war and Vietnam. in trying to talk to our lovedones back home. During the Korean war I got to talk to my mother once duing the 15 months I was over there and it cost me almost 2 months pay for a five minute call. In Vietnam it was a little better, I got to talk twice to my wife duing the 3 tours of duty I spent over there, one call was around 2 hundred dollars and the other was about 150 dollars and remember we didn't make more than a tenth of what your husband makes this day and time. so yes you will have plenty of time to talk with him free or for only a small fee.

Qatar is a pretty good assignment. I used Netzero phone service to keep in touch with my family. Also yahoo messenger. The biggest obstacle to overcome is the time differnce. 8 hours for the east coast.

just curious, does his unit have a support group? if so, that is one way to find out what is going on with him while he's there. I'm a FRG leader(family readiness group) for my husband's company(he's deployed in iraq) and we always keep the wives informed on what is going on. To communicate he may be able to go to a computer cafe, so there's email, phone and writing. get a webcam & microphone so that he can see and talk with you. You'll have some kind of communication I'm sure. may not be when you want it, just be patient and realize his purpose for being there.

Being in Qatar is not like being in Iraq. It's more or less like being in a stateside deployment. There are a lot of facilities available to talk.

Al Udeid is not bad, he will have acess to the internet. It is best to set up a hotmail or yahoo e-mail address to use over there rather than a .mil address. With the phone we found that 1010987 on a regular phone is the cheapest.

Oh,,, and make damn sure he has a good pair of sun glasses, he is going to need them!!!

Keep in touch with your FRG they will be able to help you keep in touch with your husband as well as lend support while he is deployed, although I will warn you to be wary of any gossip you hear from the ladies....but they will be your best tool to keep updated on what your husband is going through and how to keep in touch with him.
