Hirschberg said that " Calling atheism a rleigion is like calling bald a hair color." Do you agree? Why, or why not. To me it makes sense. Atheism is the absence of religous belief. Concur? Yes or no. Why.

i do agree.

it is not a religion because atheists are not gathered up and told what they need to believe in order to be called an atheist. there is no set rule. most, if not all, religions require a set of beliefs in order to be of that particular religion. that, i feel, is the fundamental difference.

Hirschberg's quote does have some relevance, but Atheism cannot be ignored when considering religions.

Religion can be very good: It brings people together.

Religion also does something very dangerous: It brings the least intelligent people of a society together.

Haven't met an atheist yet who calls atheism a religion. It's a belief system.

That makes complete sense. Religions have a moral code of conduct that their followers are expected to live by. Atheists do have this moral code, and most of us are not emotionally involved in our beliefs like religious people are. I'm open to changing my mind if someone could present me with hard evidence of a creator.

Right - it's like calling non-believers in Zeus the 'religion of non-Zeus believers'. If we don't believe that green men live on mars, it doesn't mean that we're following the religion of 'non-believers of green men on mars'. It's silly to call atheism a religion.
Now, on the other hand, we do have what Karen Armstrong has referred to as 'secular fundamentalism'. People can be 'religious' (meaning: rigid and dogmatic) in any of their positions and opinions.

Atheism is not a religion but unfortunately many use the argument as a clear act of desperation if you know what I mean...

It SHOULD be the lack of religion, but it seems that many so-called athiests feel the need to destroy the faith of others. A true athiest would not care to indulge in such things.
