I am not sure if cats are able to cry. But sometimes, it seems like they do, when they sit somewhere, quietly, without any desire to move, sitting and staring with a look like humans have when they get lost in their melancholy world. In moments like these I can see a cat crying, maybe. I am not sure if it is only in my imagination. Just a thought I had while watching.

it would seem like it, wouldn't it? domestic cats have learned to make noise because humans react to it. cats in the wild are not as noisy. so when your cat has gotten locked in the closet, they meow so we'll know to let them out.
cats purr both when they're in pain and when they're happy. so i don't think there is really anything in direct correlation between how we show emotion and how cats show emotion.

Yes, I think cats can cry. When you declipine them and when they miss you. I come home and my cat has tears in his eyes, I think he missed me. Also, if your cat has tear stains, you can give him/her distilled water to minimize that.
