This happens because the closed captions are generated by someone AS the TV show is going on. Since this person would have to be doing it really fast (using a very complicated keyboard system), it's not unreasonable to expect a few errors here and there.

I have wondered that myself, because the errors don't seem to be consistant. Sometimes the captioning will print a word that sounds like the right one, but is so different in meaning that it must have been the result of voice recognition software. (Like printing "lawyer" for "warrior," for instance.) Other times, it will substitute words that mean the same thing but don't sound anything alike, which only a human would do. I guess different shows have different means of captioning. But I can't figure out how a human OR a computer could produce the captioning you see on commercials sometimes--the ones that look like "*&^(*#@$)nn^o(wiur(r^#@". It's like the captioning program is cursing at you!

The people typing the closed captioning typed the wrong letter.

You'll notice far more errors on live programs (news, sports, etc.) than on those that are taped.
Try typing as fast as someone talks, and you'll see how hard it is! I think there may be speech-recognition software being used, as well. Any "insiders" know the scoop?

They are done "on the fly" so to speak. There is no time for corrections or spell check, and some words, as sounded, can be more than one word, such as through, threw, bowl, boll, flower, flour, wood, would, etc.

Its because of the typeset, they are def. So some times when they typing they are going too fast. So its kind of hard to type too good while your def, have to translating a show or something. Translation is the hardest thing to do. Specially if your def. Not only they have to see what the translators are saying. They also have to type while they are trying to catch up on what is going on.

because you have to translate it. The fastest wary to translate it is to do it by computer. The computer can be wrong. In latin it is very hard to translate english to latin. That is because of hte 12 endings. They varry baised on how you use the word. It is hard to translate, SO they think that if you are reading it in anouther language, you must be so fluent you wont see too much of a difference.
