What about getting them a bicycle?
I got my niece 2 Barbies and a little jewlery box and put a bunch of my old earrings in it that she's always wanted.
The make up idea is good, I've bought that for her before.. also play clothes for her to dress up in. If money is tight (and who's isn't?) go to a thrift store and get all kinds of silly things like feather boa's, hats, fancy gloves etc and put them together as 1 gift.. just remember to write her an IOU for one afternoon of you and her together to play dress up.
Boys like anything that takes batteries lol. MP3 players, a cool watch, robotic toys.. particulerly the interactive ones.. the list goes on and on.
You mentioned gameboy games but you didn't say anything about board games.. why not get them a few? Kids adore playing games with their parents and being a single mom, I'm sure you never feel that you give them enough of your time. Get them some games and actually play them with the kids. They probably won't remember what all they got for Christmas in a few years.. but they will remember how mom would play games with them. I know all this sounds so corny, but it's true.
I hope you and your children have a wonderful Christmas.

My daughter is really into girly stuff like makeup, costume jewelery and diary's (also really into horses) I got her a few bits from Claires accessories, a nice funky diary all pink and fluffy and I adopted her a pony from redwings horse sanctuary. (she's 9) My son (8) is really into Dr Who, dragons anything horrid! So I got him a couple of figures, game for his PlayStation and I also adopted him a donkey from redwings.
I've got them loads of other bits, like packs of paper, an art set which has glue paper shapes etc for cutting and sticking. A spray art pen which will probably end up spraying the walls in their bedrooms!! A board game each, a box set of books each (Narnia for girl, horrible science for boy) a few items of clothes and a couple of other little toys (the above are from father Xmas)
I brought my daughter a lovely fairy ornament (£3.50 star buy!!!) made of pewter with really delicate little wings and my son a pewter looking dragon with a crystal (again nice and cheap!) I am hoping they will start to collect these sorts of things to make present buying easier in the future!!

I got my ten year old that bratz sewing machine. It is only $40 at walmart. My son I got games for his gameboy. There are some cool ones for $10-$20 at walmart and toys r us. Movies and bikes are always winners with kids that age too.

For your daughter:
~Scrapbooking kit for her digital photos
~A new pair of sneakers
~hair notions, lip gloss
For your son:
~A new pair of sneakers
~Sports equipment
~Board games
Honestly, I am sure that your kids would understand, if, you had to wait until after Christmas to take them shopping. That way, you can hit the sales and they can pick out what they want.

How about taking them both for church service on Christmas Eve to be reminded of what Christmas is about- it would be helpful for you as well! :) If you feel you must spend more money, perhaps you could get movie passes?

That should be good enough.....you should have them do some giving as well and show them how to give and not only receive.
