You need pretty good grades, get in pretty good shape, do JROTC if you can (you dont need to, but it would help), AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITYS are extremly important; whether it be a sport, job, or whatever, you need to do something. And if at all possible try to make friends w/ government kind of people; whether it be state or national, try to email a few of them because later on you will need a reccomondation from one. And thats what most people lack becasue they wait til the last minute emailing them as a complete stranger asking for a reccomondation.
Good luck to you.

To go to the Air Force Academy (or any service academy), you can start now by excelling in academics. SAT/ACT scores will be big; if you can take PSATs or practice exams to improve your score, do so. GPA is also an important facet, as well as what classes you take: 4 years math, chemistry, physics, AP/honors classes. No matter what your major is at USAFA, you will have to take engineering classes there, so they want you to have a good base. From the athletic side, be involved in some kind of sport - it doesn't have to be with your HS. Sports captaincies look good on your application as well, if you are given that opportunity. Something like 85% of accepted cadets will have played a varsity sport in HS. You'll need to be able to run well, too... remember that Colorado Springs may be a higher elevation than you're used to running at. Seek out leadership positions, whether in school, clubs, or sports. Be involved in the community, etc. The academies are looking for "well-rounded" applicants, so you've got to hit all 3 categories. As for your congressman's or senator's recommendation - you will not start that process until the summer after your junior year (when you start the official application). You contact each office individually - 2 senators & your district's congressman - and they will give you details on how to set up an interview. You might also look into Civil Air Patrol, if there is a nearby unit you can be involved with. Finally - check USAFA's website for information regarding their Summer Seminar program. This is a week to spend at the Academy, learning from current cadets about life there and getting to experience some of what it's like. Also, they will see you and add an evaluation of you to your admissions packet. Good luck!

If you are a freshman then there is sufficient time to get an invitation to attend the USAF Academy. You must be selected by your Senator or Congressional representative to be accepted, so you might start a campaign to get to know them and what they require. You should be able to get a list of your Congressional members from the internet.
You might write the Academy at Colorado Springs find out what the current requirements are. They can send you literature as to what to expect, subjects needed to be accepted as well as minimum grades necessary. There might even be some Junior college courses that you might take that would be acceptable prior to your enrolling
If you go to a recruiter make sure that he/she understand that you want to attend the AF academy and not the regular Air Force. You might even take the ASVAB test given by them or your school. it will tell you if you are capable of getting into the Academy.
If your high school has a Jr ROTC you might join them as a stepping stone to the actual military.
I don't know your reason for attending the Academy, but if it is because you have a desire to fly, make sure that you have 20/20 non-correctable eye sight. There are lots of others that attend that are not pilots I was just mentioned that in the event you had designs on becoming a pilot.
Mostly the military academies are scientific in nature, but other degrees are offered.
I hope this has been of some use to you, good luck.

Contact your local Air Force Recruiter, and have him help you out in knowing what is needed to get into the Academy. Also, your Guidance Councillor in HS should have all the requirements. DONT let him or her discourage you. Also, you will need to have one of your US Senators make the appointment. But the Recruiter will help you in that. Good Luck.
