It's not strange at all. She obviously values your friendship and sees you as someone significant and special in her life. I chose a good friend to be my maid of honor and not a family member. The question is do you feel comfortable in this role as maid of honor? If not, talk to your friend about the situation and ask her why she chose you over her older sister, just be honest and open. Weddings are very special occasions and I'm sure your best friend would not want you to feel awkward or obligated in any way. If indeed she is your best friend, she will understand your concerns.

I have a sister, but askes my best friend to be my maid of honor. I don't think it's strange. A sister will always be a sister, but this is a great way to let your bestfriend know that you love her like a sister!

no that is totally normal it does not have to be a family member to be a maid of Honor myself an my two other sisters all said we would have a friend as a maid of Honor so we would not offend one sister that we did not pick them as a maid of Honor both my sisters picked old friends that they knew for 25 years

That is a very personal choice. The maid of honor should be someone that person feels will be a support to them during the wedding preparation process, can help them get organized, keep them sane and organizes the showers.
Let them decide who they consider in their mind fulfills the role of "person closest to them on earth" because that is what the maid of honor and best man position is.

No, my best friend was my maid of honor. Who cares what other people think? Only what the bride and groom want matters. If the bride is closer to someone over another person who happens to be blood, she should choose the person she would prefer to fill that role.

No, I don't think that's strange. I know that I want my best friend to be my maid of honor at my wedding. No one should be offended by what or who you have in your wedding because it's YOUR wedding. Do what feels right to you and remember to have fun!

No, usually the maid of honor is the bride's best friend, although it could be family. Actually in my opinion, this is the bride's wedding. Her dream day. She can have it any way she wants it. If people don't like it, they don't have to attend it. I say you go ahead and be her maid of honor. Best of luck to you and her.
