I'm baking sugar cookies and want to decorate them. I've got the little tubes of color, but how do I put the color on without melting the sugar? Or do I just wait til the stuff drys and break it up?

I have been coloring my own sugar for years! Here is how I do it:

I just added the color drops to the white sugar-mixe up the sugar and food coloring and leave them over overnight.

I squish out any lumps that were left after it dried- with a spoon.

I suppose if you were in a hurry you could dry the colored sugar very carefully in a warm oven. Keep an eye on it!

Making your own colored sugar is fun and does save quite a bit of money when you are making a lot of cookies.

Putting in it in a tall container and shaking it is another good way to color it.
Merry Christmas!

To color granulated sugar, put one to three drops of food coloring in a small jar. Swirl the coloring around to coat the sides of the jar. Pour in 1/4-cup to 1/3-cup of sugar and shake vigorously until evenly colored.

Try placing sugar in a bag, put in a couple of drops and shaking it all up. Used to work in the good ol days with ordinary food coloring.

Put the sugar in a tall container you can shake or stir vigorously.
Add a drop or 2 of coloring & shake or stir til it's well mixed.

I use a large Ziploc bag and then I add the food coloring first and coat the bag, then I add my sugar and shake the heck out of it.
