Although very productive due to decomposition (of peat like organics) and photosynthesis during the warm period, the tundra is frozen for almost half the year.

Estimations of total Carbon dioxide production may have been in error. The situation is far more complex. See the site belows and its references:

This involves injecting CO2 (carbon dioxide) into the ground so it cannot get into the atmosphere. However with all that freezing going on in the Alaska tundra, the earth cracked and let out all the carbon dioxide from ancient history.
