If you have some Valerian in the house, then take a dose -it's a powerful herb which should be taken half an hour before bedtime. Go and buy some if it's a recurring problem.
If it's a one off, it's likely your nerves are on edge so allow yourself a ten minute workout, that'll release the right type of hormones to pacify the adrenaline and calm you down.

I hate to take medication, but sometimes the only way I can sleep is to take an anti-nauseant like Gravol. For some reason they knock me right out and I sleep well and don't wake up groggy. Other friends find Benedryl Allergy works for them. The other thing that can work is eating a carb - sandwich or pasta.
Sweet dreams.

well if wookie's idea won't help you. I would say do some herbal teas, there is one I have called Sleepy Time. When I can't fall asleep I drink a cup of that and pretty much pass out, there are other types as well. You could try the warm milk method, but I don't know if that will work.

Think I will have the same prob tonight (10.20 here, sheffield UK) as I met someone pretty stunning today and I think I will be letting my thoughts wander for quite some time.
Turn off your PC and dim the lights. You should develop a "winding down" routine about an hour and a half before bedtime. Which amounts to boring your brain to sleep.... sleep well.

At 5am the entire world around you is getting up.
Cars starting, trucks rattling, people slamming doors,
dogs barking, someone yelling, police sirens, sooooo
you see the thing is you are being awaken by all the
morning bull...buy some ear plugs and your problem
in totally gone. I've been sleeping soundly ever
since I got mine. At least try it. Good Luck.

Here's a trick that I figured out that often works:
When you awaken, kick off the blanket, take off your pj's and lie in bed naked or almost naked, with the air conditioning on or the heat turned off. Wait till your body temp goes way down (it goes up when we awaken) and then when you can't take it any more, snuggle up under the blankets and try to get warm.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Either get up, do something, like go for a walk, read a book, dance around the room, etc, or....use lavendar oil. Either put it in an oil burner or put some on your pillow, it is AMAZING for helping you sleep.
