Funny, because here 444-4444 is the number to some pizza chain, Papa John's or Pizza Hut or something...

I've never heard that 555-5555 works anywhere...that's why they're allowed to show it on TV.

Usually these numbers are avoided because people do not want bogus calls, however, for businesses a newspaper, etc. it is a very ad-savvy number. You run and ad, and try to forget the phone number, right. Below I linked to a comprehensive Web page about the 867-5309. It was originally a real phone number in many area codes. It was read on a bathroom wall and use to ring to a prostitute named Jenny.

As stated earlier, the phone number prefix '555' is reserved for the television industry. No one uses it, except maybe for Time and Temperture recordings
The song is called Jenny (867-5309) by the group Tommy Tutone. The song does not give an area code.

I think it's funny that the USA is the only country in the world where the authorities have invented a fictitious area code for films etc. Why?? It always makes me laugh when you get to a tense part of some drama and the hero says a telephone number that starts with 555 and still keeps a straight face. All dramatic effect is lost in an instance.

1) (nnn)555-1212 (nnn=area code) used to to Operator Asst in the area code. I don't think you need to call it anymore. Prefix 555 is not assigned anywhere else.
2) Here's a website where you can look up valid a/c prefix combos.
3) There are no restrictions on 444, so the local rag was lucky to get it (The San Fran paper has 777-7777)

Actually, there are some working '555' numbers...For instance, 1-800-555-xxxx are used for several 'adult chat lines.'.. The 867-5309 was supposed to actually be the former phone number of one of the band members girlfriends..!! 1-800-444-4444 tells you your phone number. (Provided by MCI.)
