Typically, most are ready at 5 or 6. I got my first two wheeled bike for my 6th birthday and I was able to learn to ride it without training wheels. If you don't mind buying a bike with training wheels, 4 is the typical age. Every kid is different, though. I had a plastic Hot Wheels bike (trike) when I was 4 and I wore that things slap-kadab-out. Personally, I am not a fan of training wheels. They end up warping too quickly and give a false sense of security. I am glad my mom and dad let me learn to ride the big kid way. When learning to ride, if the bike is the right size for the kid, they are able to catch themselves before they hit the ground. If the bike is too big from the get-go, it is dangerous.

Go to a bike store not a department store and ask them what size is best for your child. Some children are to small for a bike. I had my first bike without training wheels at 3, my sister was 4. My nieces are 4 and 6 and are both using training wheels. It depends on how comforatable they are at pedaling and balance. I would say a first bike at 3. A trike at 1 1/2 or 2, but a bike at 3.

My 3 yr old rides a 2 wheeler with training wheels.
My other son started at 3 1/2 but we didn't take off the training wheels until he was 5.

Depends on the kid.
My 2 almost 3 year old is rollin around with only one trainning wheel on her little bike now. She thinks shes getting "too old" for the 1 training wheel and wants to take it off on her 3rd bday which is in less then a month. lol

My daughter just turned four and we got her one for her B-Day. She's having a blast with it. (Of course it has training wheels, and she wears a helmet, knee and elbow pads)
