You must complete 4 years of med school before you start a residency. Residency is where you specialize in a medical field. During your 3rd and 4th year of medical school you do clinical rotations where you can experience/try out/learn more about different specialties.

During residency, it depends on where you do your training. In most cases you will be working 80 hours a week and have very little time for extra curriculars. You are definitely more busy than med students- you get to manage/teach the med students on your team. The hours depend on the specialty.

My husband is a surgical resident. He works at least 80 hrs a week- normally closer to 90. He's on call every 4 days so he works from 6am one day until 10am the following day. Sure he has the rest of the day off after that, but sometimes there are classes he has to stay for and by time he gets home and eats (he's always hungry) he wants to nap for a little bit (he doesn't get sleep while on call)...and the day is pretty much over....cause he has to be up by 4:30 or so the next morning again. The days he is not on call -- he works from 6am until at least 6pm. So he doesn't have much time to do anything outside of the hospital or our family.
