There are several basic steps one can take when depressed.

1. If the "depression" is actually a "mood" then remind yourself that there are ups and downs in life and to think of a happier time. This happier mood will surely return...eventually.

2. Write a list of 10 things you are grateful for. Better yet, get outside, and maybe even take a brisk walk and make this list mentally. Also note that aerobic exercise has been clinically proven to successfully repace antidepressants for many people!

3. Pray or meditate about someone who might need love and service. Then go do it! Perspective is everything.

4. If the depression does not lift at all after trying these or other measures and might be lasting several weeks or months, perhaps seek treatment for chemical imbalance, thyroid trouble, etc. Some people are very sensitive to all the additives in food or just to heavier foods in general. Experiment with organic, raw, vegetarian or vegan menus.

Too depressed to even try any of these suggestions? Call a loved one and ask for help. Sometimes you need someone to kick your butt into gear.

Life is precious!

"Men are that they might have joy"

right? :)

Get your Thyroid tested. An under active thyroid causes depression. I was severely depressed for 7 years, and once I went on the thyroid meds. I was well in one month.

I read books that have positive main characters in them (#1 Ladies Detective Agency series or Mrs. Pollifax series are favorites).

I watch funny movies.

I pet my cat.

I remind myself that I have good days and that they will come again (if not tomorrow probably the day after that).

If all else fails, I have a cup of hot chocolate and curl up in bed with my cat and go to sleep.

Past tense.... What did I do when I was depressed?

Learned cognitive therapy as taught by David Burns, M.D. ♥

Once mastered, no more depression.... period.
