In the past they never said what type of vinegar, and all it said as i recall on the ingredients list is that it contains 'vinegar'.

After the limited research I did online, I found that spirit vinegar contains a small amount of alcohol in it, hence 'spirit' vinegar!

has any body been able to find anything reliable that states that it is halal or haram?

Vinegar is defined as sour wine. It is made after the yeast turns the sugars to alcohol and then the bacteria turn the alcohol to acid. Vinegar is 5 to 6 % acetic acid.
I did find that it is halal. on a couple sites. On another it said it was 12 % acetic acid and not halol certified.
In general, if the bacteria have turned the alcohol to acid, there is no alcohol left.
