A Phoenix is too cliche.

I agree with everyone who said to find what is most meaningful to you.

My abuse-survivor tat is the Romanian proverb "Apa Trece, Pietrele Ramin' and it means the Water Flows, the Rocks Remain. I am the water flowing on and leaving the rocks behind me.

First off, Good for you for surviving that and coming out of it a stronger person. Like its already been said, tattoos are very personal, ultimately its your decision, but I understand you're just looking for ideas. I thought the pheonix idea was good, also getting something in kanji that means strength would be a good idea too. I'd suggest doing some research for similiar ideas. Find what images resemble strength or overcoming obsticles.
The great thing about tattoos is they can mean anything you want them to. No matter what they are. It can look like an ordinary tattoo to someone else but hold a powerful and personal meaning for you.

ie- you could get a butterfly tattoo, because butterflies start off as small ugly creatures and turn into something beautiful and majestic. You survived an ugly relationship and came out of it a beautiful stronger person.

I can tell whatever you get will hold strong meaning for you so I suggest doing some serious research and consideration so you end up with something great that means the world to you.

I would also have to say that they are both horrible, but they are interconnected; Emotional abuse often turns into physical abuse, whether it's by the abuser, or by the person being abused (like suicide in extreme cases). Physical abuse often comes with emotional abuse, as it usually comes from a loved one. What's even worse is when physical and/or emotional abuse occur without protest or any form self-defense. If you know someone that is being abused, get them away from their abuser, or contact authorities to intervene!

Getting a tattoo is an intensely personal decision. No one else can tell you what to get. It sounds like you'd like to make a statement about overcoming an awful past, and about being a stronger person now.

Another poster suggested a phoenix rising from the ashes. I think that's a beautiful idea, because a phoenix symbolizes rebirth and strength.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck and best wishes!

I have to agree with "In for the long run". Finding something that helped you overcome may be the perfect subject matter. Symbols are very important in healing and recovery. That's why I got my tattoo. Remember that in time you may not want to be reminded of all this. You move from victim, to survivor, and eventually may just want to be YOU...label free. I hope that makes sense. I recommend choosing something that was always YOU. That made you smile or feel strong before this all happened, and will continue to in the future. Something no one can ever take away. It will come to you...and it will be PERFECT!

what means survival for you? nobody can really give you a better idea than yourself. is there a ribon that represents abuse (like the aids and cancer ribon?) if i were you i would think about it. meditate on what your survival means to you and i promise when you think of what it is that you want you'll know it immediately. good luck and i'm glad you are doing well now.

well what was it that allowed you to get over such an obsticle? That way you can look at it and it will make you stonger and remind you that you can do it and you can get through something that seems difficult at first. its hard to tell someone what to get. Its your achievement and its your body. Get something that makes you feels the way you want to feel and something that encourages you to have the drive to get out of something as bad at physical and emotional abuse. Im sure whatever you decide you'll love it!

Obviously you are a survivor. A tattoo of a phoenix rising from the ashes might be appropriate for you.

Dont get a tatoo--it will only REMIND you of what happened. I'm a Survivor honey, and the key to survival is DONT LOOK BACK.

Move forward! Get a new hairstyle, a new wardrobe--look fabulous. Thats how you do it.
